This is a good starting point for exploring the nature of interactive narratives. Murray does a nice job of placing interactive storytelling within its larger historic context, and outlines some of its core attributes. She also imagines the directions that interactive narratives may go in the future, but readily admits that we are still on the verge of putting the computer to use as a "spellbinding storyteller."
