The Presidential Timeline Project

The twelve Presidential Libraries of the National Archives are spread out literally across the country, from Massachusetts to California to Texas.
Asia Trail Opens at the National Zoo

If you're in Washington, D.C., be sure to stop by the National Zoo's wonderful new Asia Trail exhibition. We designed a series of interactive kiosks for the trail that examine the complex issues surrounding conservation. Visitors are able to examine real-life issues faced by communities and wildlife in India and China, listen to the perspectives of people who are directly impacted by the issues, and finally weigh in with their own opinions.

We're proud to announce that Churchill and the Great Republic, the online exhibition we produced last year for the Library of Congress, has been selected for inclusion in the 2006 Communication Arts Interactive Annual. One of the judges described it as "wonderfully dynamic, beautifully designed, and smartly organized." Another said it was "a great, cinematic experience with the kind of flow that made me want to explore for hours."

Churchill and the Great Republic Receives MUSE Award

Churchill and the Great Republic, an online exhibition Terra Incognita produced for the Library of Congress, has received a silver MUSE award from the American Association of Museums. The judges said, "This is one of the best Web sites we have seen in a long time. The elegant and professional manner in which it is presented is outstanding. From the look-and-feel, the content, the method of delivery, and the navigation, this Web site stands well above many in existence today. Very good job!"

Explore the Lost Gospel of Judas

After 1700 years, an ancient Coptic manuscript containing the lost Gospel of Judas has been identified, preserved, and authenticated. The Lost Gospel, a new online feature for National Geographic, explores the history of this document and its importance in our understanding of early Christianity. In the site, visitors can examine selections from the document, and compare Coptic transcriptions and English translations. There is also a detailed timeline of early Christian history and information about how the document was preserved and authenticated.

It’s that time of year again. South by Southwest (SXSW), Austin’s home-grown festival of music, film, and interactive, will take over the town in mid-March. It’s great to get so many creative people here at once to spark new ideas. We’re proud to announce that a couple of our projects — Churchill and the Great Republic and the Genographic Project — are finalists in the interactive competition’s Educational Resouce category.

Happy Birthday, Ben Franklin!

300 years ago today Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston. Celebrate his genius (and humor) in this new web site for the Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary. There’s an online exhibition, with excerpts from the exhibition that will be traveling across the country and to Paris. The Frankliniana Database is the first comprehensive collection of artifacts owned or otherwise connected to Franklin. On a design note, we styled the site as if it were printed by Franklin himself. In fact, the ornaments and borders we used were taken directly from Franklin’s own catalog.

The Integrated Experience Model

For the last several years, our studio has been working on defining (and refining) a generalized experience model for online exhibitions that takes into account the different needs of multiple audience types. We first began work on the model with Becoming Human in 2000, and have since incorporated it into other online exhibitions. This design article (based on a paper that was presented at Museums and the Web 2004) outlines the components of this integrated model, and shows how we applied it to the Lewis & Clark online exhibition.
